ChatGPT went Plus. Microsoft borrowed from ChatGPT, launched CoPilot and then went Pro.

ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month. And now CoPilot Pro is…$20. Ah, come on. Which one do we pick now? CoPilot is Microsoft, powered by ChatGPT so what’s the difference really? Should you sub? Should you switch?

Here’s my honest breakdown and POV one which is better for you.

Two major players with premium offerings: Microsoft’s Copilot Pro and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus. Both at $20 per month, these platforms promise enhanced AI capabilities, but how do they differ, and which one offers the best value for your investment? Let’s dig into the features, differences, and best use cases for each.

Copilot Pro and ChatGPT Plus: The Premium Experience Compared

Both Copilot Pro and ChatGPT Plus represent the most affordable paid tiers from Microsoft and OpenAI, respectively. A notable similarity is their capability to create AI images with DALL-E 3. Copilot Pro, as advertised on its sales page, allows users to generate landscape images rapidly with 100 boosts per day using Designer (fka Bing Image Creator, fka Paint). ChatGPT also offers landscape image generation with DALL-E 3, which some have noted mixed results.

Key Features of the Premium Subscriptions

Both Copilot Pro and ChatGPT Plus provide “priority access to GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo during peak times,” ensuring accelerated performance for generating answers, content, and AI images. Given that both utilize the same underlying large language models (LLMs), the differentiation lies in their feature sets.

Copilot Pro distinguishes itself with its integration into Microsoft 365 Office apps. This integration allows users to draft documents, summarize emails, create presentations, and more within the Microsoft ecosystem. This feature is particularly beneficial for users already ingrained in Microsoft’s suite of tools, offering a seamless, productivity-enhancing experience. Especially since Office hasn’t had a significant upgrade in years, this may be the first time you actually want to use Powerpoint again.

User Interface and User Experience

When it comes to user interfaces, Microsoft Copilot and OpenAI ChatGPT exhibit clear distinctions. ChatGPT offers a simple GUI, focusing on the essentials like the model in use (GPT-4 for Plus users) and a prompt window. This minimalist approach suits users who prefer a straightforward, no-frills interaction with their AI assistant.

In contrast, Copilot’s GUI is more vibrant and feature-rich. It provides six use case suggestions, a prompt to upgrade to Copilot Pro, and a unique “conversation style” selector above the prompt window. This feature allows users to alter the tone of the AI’s responses, independent of the prompt’s content — a contrast to ChatGPT, where the response’s tone is solely dependent on the user’s input.

Choosing the Right AI Companion for Your Needs

The decision between Copilot Pro and ChatGPT Plus boils down to your specific requirements and existing workflow. If you are heavily invested in the Microsoft ecosystem and seek an AI assistant that integrates seamlessly with Office applications, Copilot Pro is an obvious option. Its ability to interact and enhance productivity within Microsoft 365 apps makes it a valuable tool for those immersed in that environment.

On the other hand, if you value a straightforward, versatile AI assistant that can cater to a wide range of requests and you’re less concerned about specific application integrations, ChatGPT Plus might be more aligned with your needs. Its simplicity and focus on the core functionalities of an AI chatbot make it a versatile choice for a diverse user base.

Both Copilot Pro and ChatGPT Plus offer compelling features at the $20/month price point, but their value is context-dependent. If you are seeking deep integration with Microsoft’s suite of tools, Copilot Pro is the go-to choice. However, if you need a more generic, flexible AI assistant, ChatGPT Plus stands out. Ultimately, the decision hinges on how you plan to use these tools in your daily work or personal projects.
